2023 | Zhuhai (CN)Braving the Storm: The Epic Creation of Bermuda Storm
When Chimelong set out to create the world’s largest indoor theme park, Chimelong Spaceship, they had a bold vision: to push the boundaries of immersive entertainment. Among its crown jewels would be a groundbreaking 4D attraction – one that wouldn’t just tell the story of a ship caught in a raging storm but would pull guests into the chaos itself.
The challenge? To craft an experience so intense, so realistic, that visitors wouldn’t just watch the storm unfold – they would feel every wave, every gust of wind, and every crack of thunder as if they were truly aboard a ship lost in the Bermuda Triangle. This required an unprecedented fusion of cutting-edge motion simulation, high-definition visuals, and multi-sensory effects on a scale never attempted before.
To bring this ambitious vision to life, Chimelong assembled an international team of experts, including KLT, Far Out! Creative, Technifex, Yessian Music, Visual Terrain, Mack Animation, Brogent, and more. By combining their diverse expertise, they created an attraction that goes beyond spectacle – one that is truly revolutionary because of the technology that transforms it from a show into a fully immersive experience:
- At the heart of the attraction is a massive 44-meter diameter, 1,682-square-meter curved projection screen, enveloping guests in breathtakingly realistic visuals.
- A colossal moving simulator platform – Accommodating up to 300 guests, the motion platform sways, tilts, and shifts in sync with the on-screen chaos, plunging visitors into the storm’s fury.
- A spine-shaking 41-channel 3D sound system – With 15 massive 2 x 18 inch subwoofers behind the screen, two very low-frequency elements embedded in the floor, and a large number of transducers beneath the platform, the theater doesn’t just project sound – it vibrates with the power of the storm.
- An arsenal of special effects – Wind, mist, and lighting effects blur the line between fiction and reality, ensuring guests feel the storm’s force.
Bringing all these elements together into one seamless, fully integrated system was no small feat. KLT played a key role in engineering the attraction’s media technology and playback systems, spanning the queue, preshow, and main theater. To ensure everything functioned flawlessly, KLT even built a mock-up near its headquarters, where technical experts, creative visionaries, and a motion sickness specialist fine-tuned the experience before its final implementation.
Setting Records & Earning Industry Recognition
More than just an engineering marvel, Bermuda Storm has shattered records and earned global recognition. It holds two Guinness World Records:
- World’s Highest Seated Capacity Motion Simulator (304 people on a single platform)
- World’s Largest Curved Projection Screen (1,682+ square meters)
Its innovation has also been celebrated across the industry, winning a THEA Award for Outstanding Achievement and an Inavation Award for Arts & Experience Project.
Thanks to the ambitious vision of Chimelong and the collaboration of world-class creative and technical teams, Bermuda Storm is more than an attraction – it’s a tempest unleashed, a breathtaking adventure that pushes the limits of what’s possible in immersive entertainment.
